FOREWORD
In an age that more and more makes of
the Christian Church a purely human insti-
tution, serving purely human ends, we are
deeply grateful for the divine revelation of
Scripture which gives us a true picture of
the cause and need of the Church’s existence.
In addition to this divinely recorded revela-
tion we see the evidences of the history of
the Church in general and of our own be-
loved Zion congregation in particular.
Memories of past experiences are sacred
to a Christian, since they bear testimony of
God’s abundant grace and loving kindness.
This continuing and constant care of the
Lord for our dear Zion congregation, evi-
denced by those experiences which we es-
pecially remember on the 25th anniversary
year, is in itself a proof of the fact that the
Church is His and a warrant for blessings
from Him in the future.
May we in that spirit celebrate this
Jubilee and not with vain boasting and self-
glorification. May a retrospect of the path
Zion has travelled show us above all how
marvelously the Lord has directed and led
us. And then may such meditation lead us
to a trustful, willing service to Him in the
path that stretches ahead to the distant
horizon of tomorrow.
“I remember the days of old: I meditate
on all thy works.” - Psalm 143, 5.
FIRST SERVICES
Zion Evangelical Lutheran
Church of Ellendale, North Da-
kota was organized May 20,
1923. The first chairman of the
congregation was Mr. George
Banse. He and a few other Lu-
therans in Ellendale hade gone
to Rev. Paul L. Kluender of Al-
bion Township with the request
that he help them organize a
Lutheran Church here. Pastor
Kluender accordingly preached
his first sermon in the rented
Presbyterian Church in Ellen-
dale on Nov. 18, 1922. Later
this same Presbyterian Church
was purchased, and still serves
as our church today. Soon after
Pastor Kluender started to con-
duct services here, the congrega-
tion rented the Norwegian Lu-
theran Church in the south part
of the city. Here services were
held on week-days, since Pastor
Kluender’s Sunday schedules
were too full to permit him to
have services also in Ellendale
on Sundays. Pastor Kluender
was called to Melrose Park, Illi-
nois in 1923. He preached his
farewell sermon in Zion Church
April 1, 1923 - on Easter Sun-
day.
CONGREGATION
ORGANIZED
Pastor Kluender had organiz-
ed Bethlehem Lutheran Church
at Forbes Feb. 4, 1923. After
Easter the Forbes coneregation
called Pastor Theo. Klatt from
Kulm, North Dakota. Pastor
Klatt then served the congrega-
tion in Ellendale, and organized
the congregation May 20, 1923.
He was installed in the rented
Norwegian Lutheran Church by
Pastor A. G. Merkens of Leola,
South Dakota. The charter
members of the congregation
were George Banse, R. H. Tros-
in, Adolph Hiepler, Sr., Fred
Kirschner, Jacob Schneck, John
Kosel, Julius Olek, Henry Grubb,
Ed. Jeske, Christian Nishek, Au-
gust Schultz, August Fetzer,
and John Fetzer. Some of these
people had been members of
Christ Lutheran Church, Albion
Township, and received their re-
lease from that congregation to
organize the church in Ellen-
dale. An interesting experience
is told of the Adolph Hiepler
family. One Sunday they were
on their way to the Albion
church in their Model T Ford,
when a connecting rod burned
out. Determined to go to church
that Sunday morning, the boys
pulled on their overalls, put in
a new connecting rod which they
had been carrying as a spare,
filled the crankcase with oil, and
continued on their way, arriving
just in time to hear the pastor
say “Amen” to his sermon.
The first Elders were Fried-
rich Kirschner and August
Schultz. Mr. George Banse was
the first Treasurer, and Mr.
Adolph Hiepler, Sr. was the first
Secretary. Mr. Hiepler served
as secretary from the time of
the founding of the congregation
in 1923 until 1936, a total of 13
years. He passed to his eterna'
reward in 1938. The oil paint-
ine of Christ above the altar, as
well as the crucifix in our church
THE NORWEGIAN LUTHERAN
CHURCH
today were presented to the con-
gregation as a memorial for Mr.
Hiepler.
All the minutes from the be-
ginning till 1936 were recorded
in the German language. On
June 30, 1924 the congregation
was incorporated as the “Deut-
sche Ev. Lutherische Zionsge-
meinde”. Later, in the year
1928, the name was translated
into the English language:
“Zion Evangelical Lutheran
Church.” At first German serv-
ices were conducted exclusively.
But already in 1924 there were
a few English services. The ar-
rangement at that time was: one
English and three German serv-
ices a month, all of them in the
afternoon. The collections from
the English services covered the
rent of $2.00 a month which was
paid for the use of the Norwegi-
an Lutheran Church.
THE REV. THEO. KLATT
VACANCY
On June 8, 1924 Pastor Klatt
received his release from this
parish and accepted the call to
Sumner, Iowa, where he later
died.
The congregation was now
without a pastor for some time,
but was served by Pastor John
Brandt of Albion Township. On
Feb. 8, 1925 the Ellendale and
Forbes congregations decided to
call another pastor. The call
went first to Rev. Arnold H.
Grumm of Garrison, North Da-
kota; but he declined it. Then
the call went to Rev. B. F.
Cordes of Sidney, Montana. He
also returned the call. Finally,
the Forbes congregation alone
called Pastor H. Teske, who ac-
cepted the call. Now Forbes had
a pastor, but Ellendale did not.
So, the Ellendale congregation
asked Pastor J. Brandt of Al-
bion Township to continue to
serve as vacancy pastor. This
he did with the help of Student
E. H. Becker, who is now pastor
at Salem, Oregon. Soon, how-
ever, Pastor Carl D. Eifert of
Hecla, South Dakota was asked
to help as vacancy pastor. In
1927 Students Becker and G.
Hinck conducted the mid-week
Lenten services in Ellendale.
Student Hinck was the son of
Pastor T. Hinck, first pastor at
Albion, but at this time serving
our church at Great Bend, North
Dakota.
SUNDAY SCHOOL
The congregation recognized
the importance of bringing up
her children in the nurture and
admonition of the Lord, and so
THE SUNDAY SCHOOL
TEACHING STAFF
a Sunday School was organized
Jan. 3, 1926. This Sunday School
has now grown, so that it today
has an enrollment of over 70
children, taught by a staff of
eight consecrated teachers.
VACANCY FILLED
On March 20, 1927 the con-
gregation called Pastor H. Teske
from Forbes. Pastor Teske ac-
cepted the call and was installed
in Ellendale on Palm Sunday,
April 10, 1927 by Pastor Eifert.
However, Pastor Teske still
made his residence in Forbes.
Zion Lutheran Church became
a member of the Missouri Synod
in 1927, Mr. George Banse at-
tended the District convention
at Binford near Hankinson,
North Dakota June 22 - 28, 1927
and signed Synod’s constitution
in the name of the congregation.
THE LADIES AID
LADIES AID
On Aug. 11, 1927 the Ladies
Aid presented the. congrevation
with the communion vessels
which are still in use today. The
Ladies Aid was organized at the
home of Mrs. E. A. Muske April
15, 1926. The first officers elect-
ed were Mrs. Elsie Olek, Presi-
dent; Mrs. Kanopatske, Vice
President; Mrs. Martha Hiepler,
Secretary and Treasurer. The
collection at the first meeting
amounted to $3.75. Through the
years the membership has
grown and today 22 ladies are
members of the Ladies Aid. This
group of ladies has made many
substantial donations towards
liquidation of the church debt,
installing the present light fix-
tures in the church, furnishing
the altar rug, communion ves-
sels, and in general acting as a
handmaiden to the congregation.
THE REV, HERBERT TESKE
Pastor Teske then received a
call to Bourbon, Missouri and
was granted his release from El-
lendale on Aug. 29, 1927. At pre-
sent Pastor Teske is serving in
the mission field at Fairfax,
South Dakota. He also serves
the Ft. Randall Dam Site area
as well as Butte, Nebraska.
BUYING THE CHURCH
On Oct. 6, 1927 the congrega-
tion decided to buy the church
and parsonage from the Presby-
terian Church for $2,750. Re-
pairs to the extent of $250 hai
to be made on the church; there-
fore the congregation, without
any funds in its treasury what-
soever for the purpose of buying
the property, borrowed $3,000
from the District Church Ex-
tension Fund to take care of
this matter. Mr. Paul Meyer,
Treasurer of the District at that
time, was asked to come to El-
lendale to draw up the proper
papers. In the same year, the
account was transferred from
the District to the General
Church Extension Fund of the
Missouri Synod. The entire debt
was.paid off in the year 1945.
THE PRESENT CHURCH
AND PARSONAGE
FIRST RESIDENT PASTOR
On Oct. 23, 1927 the parish
called Pastor W. E. Rohe from
Tyler, North Dakota. He ws
the first Lutheran pastor to live
in the parsonage at Ellendale.
He was installed Nov. 4, 1927
bv Pastor Eifert. In December
of 1927 Ellendale, Albion and
Forbes formed one parish. Pes-
tor Rohe served. his congrega-
tions faithfully, often going
from one place to the other on
horseback. It is said that on one
THE REV. W. E. ROHE
Sunday morning he arrived in
Forbes at 8 o’clock, and then
rested in a blacksmith shop
there till his people came to
services.
FURNISHING THE CHURCH
In 1928 the congregation re-
ceived an organ as a gift from
our Lutheran Church at Han-
kinson, North Dakota. In the
same year the congregation re-
ceived the altar from our Church
in Waterloo, Iowa, and a pulpit
from our Church in Aberdeen,
South Dakota. In the same year
there was discussion about dig-
ging a basement for the church.
It was decided that the members
would do the work themselves,
and would meet on a specified
day. Whoever could not help
with the work was to pay 50
cents an hour for the time re-
quired to complete the project.
However, nothing was done un-
til 1946, when a full basement
was built under the church. The
Ladies Aid rendered valuable
service in furnishing and dec-
orating the basement. The re-
citation benches in the basement
are the gift of the local State
Normal and Industrial College.
On Feb. 28, 1929 it was de-
cided to paint the church and
the parsonage. On June 6, 1929
a cement sidewalk was laid from
the church, and another from
the parsonage to the city side-
walk. The newly purchased
church was dedicated Nov. 17,
1929. Speakers for the occasion
were the Rev. C. Eifert, Germ-
an; the Rev. H. v. Gemmingen,
German; the Rev. J. E. 'Timian,
English. The envelope system
was introduced in 1930. In the
same year Pastor Rohe received
a call to Albany, Minnesota, He
was given his release in a meet-
ing held Sept. 25, 1930. Later
he died at Popple Creek, Minne-
sota. When Pastor Teske left
Forbes in 1927, Pastor Rohe al-
so served that congregation till
1930. When Pastor Rohe left,
the Albion congregation became
self-supporting and called its
own pastor, the Rev. H. E.
Wians.
THE REV. A. F. VOMHOF
TENTH ANNIVERSARY
Pastor A. F. Vomhof was then
called by the Ellendale and
Forbes congregations in the Fall
of 1930. He came from Gwinner,
North Dakota. The tenth an-
niversary of the Ellendale con-
gregation was celebrated May
21, 1933. Speakers for the oc-
casion were the Rev. J. P. Klaus-
ler of Hankinson, North Dakota
and the Rev. C. Eifert ot Hecla,
South Dakota. The office of Fi-
nance Secretary was called into
being in 1933, and Walter Hiep-
ler was elected as the first to fill
this office. From 1927 to 1932
two German and two English
services a month were held in
Ellendale. The German services
were held in the morning and
the English services in the even-
ing. But by 1938 English serv-
ices were held every Sunday
morning with a second morning
service in German twice a
month. In 1936 the congrega-
tion bought a new organ, the one
which is in use at the present
time. The Pulpit Bible in us?
today was given the congrega-
tion by Mr. and Mrs. L. E. Mer-
rick in remembrance of the day
of Confirmation of -their daugh-
ter, Lois.
NEW PARISH LINES
In 1936, after Pastor Wians
had been called away from Albi-
on, Pastor Vomhof kegan to
serve also this congregation as
vacancy pastor. Soon, however,
he was.called as regular pastor,
and continued to serve Ellendale,
Forbes, Coldwater and Albion.
He received assistance from a
number of candidates while he
served this parish, among them
were M. W. Vomhof, Reinhold
Arndt, Walter Streicher, D. R.
Boernke, Walter Biel, and Alvin
Mack. Pastor Vomhof personal-
ly paid the salaries for the first
two candidates and gave them
free room and board in the par-
sonage. The next two received
$17.50 a month ırom the congre-
gation, while Pastor Vomhof
paid the balance of their salar-
ies, room and board. The last
two received a small salary from
the congregations, while the ma-
jor portion of their salary came
from Synod's Candidate Fund.
In 1929 the parishes were again
rearranged: Forbes and Coldwa-
ter forming one parish, and Al-
bion and Ellendale another par-
ish. Pastor Harold Braun was

TODAY
In 1940 Pastor Vomhof ac-
cepted a call to Lester Prairie,
Minnesota. He preached his
farewell sermon Jan. 30, 1941.
He is at present pastor of our
Church at Winsted, Minnesota.
Pastor J. Meyer of Monango
then served a short time as va-
cancy pastor till the present
pastor, the Rev. Edwin M. F.
Jording was called from Mc-
Clusky, North Dakota. He was
installed March 16, 1941 as pas-
tor of the two churches in Albi-
on Township and Ellendale by
Rev. J. Meyer. He preached his
first sermon here March 28,
1941.
In 1942 a fire started in the
parsonage, however, the city fire
department was able to extin-
guish it before too much damage
was done. Nevertheless, the con-
gregation had to rebuild the
back porch and pantry, and re-
decorate the entire parsonage af-
ter the fire. In 1941 the entire
parsonage had been remodeled
on the inside, and a full base-
ment had been built. In the
MRS. L. E. MERRICK
Organist
Spring of 1943 the inside of the
church was completely redecor-
ated. “Nu-wood" was used to
cover the ceiling and walls, two
small arches were built on either
side of the main altar arch, and
both the church and the parson-
age were painted on the outside.
The work cost the congregation
about $900. In addition the Lad-
ies Aid had four new light fix-
tures put into the church at a
cost of $75. The pews were com-
pletely altered, so that we now
have a center aisle, instead of
the double aisle which we had
before.
THE WALTHER LEAGUE
The Walther League was or-
ganized in 1943 together with
the young people of the Albion
congregation. At the present
time the Walther League has a
membership of 23 young people.
It meets twice a month. Topic
discussions and social gather-
ings are held in the Albion
church, and Bible Study and bus-
THE REV. EDWIN M. F. JORDING
iness meetings are held in the
Ellendale church. A Vacation
Bible School is held in the
church basement every summer.
Last year Miss Dorothy Stein-
wand assisted the pastor in
teaching this school. The Vaca-
tion Bible School had an enroll-
ment of 41 children last year.
In July of 1945 Pastor Jord-
ing declined a call to Holland,
Minnesota and in December of
the same year he declined a call
to Popple Creek, Minnesota.
When, in 1946 the congregation
dug the basement under the
church, a new furnace was also
installed. This work was not
completed till the Spring of 1947.
And even today, because of the
shortage of materials, there are
stil a number of things that
must be done to complete the
basement.
On Nov. 17, 1946 the pastor
PRESENT OFFICERS of
the CONGREGATION
preached his first sermon at
Barnard, South Dakota. On Ap-
ril 27, 1947 this small congre-
gation was organized. Services
are held here every Sunday. On
July 20, 1947 the Ellendale con-
gregation received a Baptismal
Font from Trinity Lutheran
Church at Steen, Minnesota. The
Sunday School paid for the
transportation of the Baptismal
Font to Ellendale.
TWENTY-ONE
BIBLE CLASSES ORGANIZED
At a parish meeting held in
the Ellendale church Aug. 11,
1947, twenty-one Bible study
groups were formed in the El-
lendale-Albion parish. A “Key”
family is appointed by each of
the 21 groups once every two
weeks. This “Key” family meets
in the Ellendale church for Bible
study. During the following
week each “Key” family meets
with the five families in its
group for a discussion of the
Bible lesson studied. The pastor
meets with the “Key” families,
and also with one or two of the
family groups each time.
On Jan. 1, 1948 the congrega-
tion numbered 315 souls, 193
communicant members, 40 vot-
ing members. During the past
25 years 185 baptisms were per-
formed, 134 were confirmed, 75
weddings were solemnized, and
39 Christian burials were given.
